                                          the first activity of summer learning journey this year was to learn about art and                                               its property's. we used google art and culture colouring book to create a remix of                                             an art work.  on this  piece i tried to create the depth of the water  by using                                                      different shades of blue and making it brighter because i thought the original one                                              was a little dull so i brightened it.

How fireworks are made

Fireworks, so colorful and bright they just light up the night sky, but have you ever wondered what they are made of?

Well i’ll tell you now. Fireworks are highly dangerous explosives that explode in the sky. They are long paper tubes filled with gunpowder/blackpowder which is highly flammable and can explode when put next to a heat source.  Sometimes they have projectiles that shoot  when the  gunpowder is ignited and the projectiles are filled with gunpowder and then the projectiles explode in separate areas. The fuse. The fuse is the thing that you light with fire, which then goes to the gunpowder to create the colorful explosion. The color of the fireworks comes from meal salts. When heated these salts create colors. Aluminium is used for white and silver fireworks. While all the other colors are made from different  elements like strontium carbonate maks cheerful red fireworks, calcium chloride makes great orange fireworks, sodium nitrate creates vibrant yellow fireworks, barium chloride makes bright green fireworks and  copper chloride makes deep blue fireworks. Some fireworks have separate projectiles shot at different times like long tube ones. The source of most fireworks is a small tube called an aerial shell that contains explosive chemicals. All the lights, colors, and sounds of a firework come from these chemicals. An aerial shell is made of gunpowder, which is a well-known explosive, and small globs of explosive materials called stars. Catherine wheels. The Catherine wheel or pinwheel is a type of firework consisting either of a powder-filled spiral tube, or an angled rocket mounted with a pin through its centre. A sparkler is a type of hand held firework that burns slowly and creates a colorful effect.

 I am going to camp and this is how I feel about it 

Camp is coming in 6 days and this is how i feel about it; I am feeling super excited about coming to camp. It will be the best  experience ever. 

There is a lot to do there such as: BMX bikes, archery, air rifles (paint ball) and more. The one I am  most looking forward to is the archery. There will also be some hiking to Raglan beach which in close by.

In Raglan we are staying for 3 days and we are sleeping in dormitories. Each dormitory has bunk beds and can bed  about 10  people. 

Camp is 135km away from Papakura and takes about 1:40 minutes to get there. Here are some directions.

You start at the Papakura central school top car park

follow ray small drive up to Eliot street then turn left onto beach road

follow until beach road and turn right

follow until the southern motorway entry and follow for around 100km

take the state Hwy  39 exit continue on state Hwy 39

at the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Te Kowai continue until changes to limmer road

turn right on st Hwy 23

Turn left on norrie street

Turn right on whitly street 

Turn right on wainui road

Continue until raglan

 

Over all i am looking forward to being a part of this.

How the whales change the climate

In the last fifty years, whales have been hunted to the

brink of extinction because of uncontrolled hunting.

The whaleswere used as a source of food and fuel,

but because of uncontrolled hunting there were

fewer and fewer whales each year. It was not until

the 1980’s people started to realize what was

happening and decided to make a change. Whales

are not just not giant pots of money, their actual living

creatures. But at that time they didn't know what a

significant role that  whales played.

Yes we know that whales eat fish and krill but they

don't only eat these creatures but they also keep

them alive. In fact they sustain the entire

ocean. Whales often eat in areas which are

pitch dark.But when they come up to the surface

to breathe they enter the photic zone. The photic

zone is the top of the water where there is enough light

for plants to grow and photosynthesis to happen.

When they are in the photic zone they  send plumes

into the water, these plumes(poo) are full of iron and

nitrogen, which are very scarce in the surface waters.

A plant called plankton (which is found at the

surface of the water) uses these nutrients for itself

to reproduce. Plankton is a plant that reduces

carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is one of the reasons

for climate change and therefore the more whales there

are the more plankton there is. But thats not the only

thing they do, when they swim they make any

plankton that is sinking to go back up to the top

giving it more time to reproduce. So we can blame the whales responsible for removing tens of millions of

tons of carbon each year, so they are slowing

global warming and changing the climate.
